Sumatriptan drug also known as the Imitrex is used for the treatment
of migraine pain. It relieves the pain within short interval of time
when taken.Sumatriptan came into existence by the GaxoSmithKline
Company in the laboratory of Glaxo, which is the manufacturer of
this drug.
After undergoing many clinical trails the pills were sent for the
approval from FDA that is the Food and Drug Administration in United
States (US).
Imitrex is considered as the golden standard in treating the acute
pain of migraines. Still to overcome the problems faced with
Sumatriptan FDA granted some approvals after struggling for three
long years. This approval was given to a neurologist in Missoula.
The approval was regarding the study of the effects of Marijuana
with comparison to Dronabinol and also of the drug sumatriptan when
injected. This study was not just made on clinical trails but was
made on experimenting the patients suffering from severe migraine
headaches.
About forty patients were involved in these studies who were tested
with different drugs like THC tetrahydrpcannabinol, synthetic THC
also known as Dronabinol and Sumatriptan.This tests proved that
sumatriptan was still better than the other two to treat migraine
with minimal side effects and better treatment.
The drug also posses some side effects due to which it is only sold
and available in the market by a qualified physician or the doctor’s
prescription. The powerful effects of the drug in treating the
migraine headache assure the bright future of the drug.
