Before knowing how Sumatriptan works in the treatment of migraine,
it is important to know what happens when migraine occurs. When a
migraine attack occurs, it is generally due to the low levels of the
serotonin in the human brain.Sumatriptan’s role is to administer and
then aid accordingly to the serotonin levels in the brain. The
chemical sumatriptan is same as serotonin in context of structure.
It also serves as a 5-HT agonist.
This is one type of receptors which is binded to the serotonin. The
subtypes of these receptors, in the presence of the cranial and the
arteries specifically the basilar arteries, get activated.
Vasoconstriction of the dilated arteries is caused due to the
activation of these receptors.
The activity of trigeminal nerves can also be controlled and
decreased with the help of Sumatripan. This is one of the reasons
why Sumatriptan’s efficiency is better than other drugs while
treating the cluster headaches. Cluster headaches are very painful
and debilitating kind of headaches.
According to tests and surveys it has been noted that taking
Sumtriptan in the injection form, 95% to 96% of patients have been
relieved within fifteen minutes. The drug is only effective in
treating the migraine pain once it has already occurred.
It does not prevent the pain itself. With many other clinical test
carried out it had also been noticed that an drug Eletriptan (doses
of 40mg and 80mg) was better than Sumatriptan 9doses of 50mg and
100mg) if one could resist it’s side effects and problems.
